"These muster roll names represent a spot in time near the organization of the 38th Alabama Infantry in 1862. The muster rolls are available at Alabama Department Archives and History. About twice as many names associated with the 38th Alabama can be accessed in the book Southerners at War - the 38th Alabama Infantry Volunteers. There are 1498 names, records and documents in the book taken from Compiled Service Records available at US National Archives and other depositories.

In both cases the original copies are in hand-written script and are transcribed from sometimes poor copy, thus errors will be present. Please check all possible spellings for names. Some members could not read and write and the company clerks did the best that they could with phonics causing other errors in spelling.

From time to time documents surface that indicate a individual has served with the regiment and his name does not appear on either the muster roll or compiled service records. Many of the regiment’s records were lost at Missionary Ridge, TN. We much appreciate these records that did survive this momentous upheaval in our country’s history." - Art Green
